Boteh (بته) - the seed that refused to stand still

Persia, ca. 9th century · 6 min read · known in the West as paisley

The teardrop shape you are about to color has crossed more borders than most passports. In Persia it is the boteh - a cypress bending in the wind, strength that knows how to yield.

Weavers carried it along the Silk Road, knot by knot, dyed with madder root - رناس - the red that has anchored Persian carpets for three thousand years.

Provenance. After a 17th-c. Kerman carpet, V&A no. 719-1897 · redrawn by A. Solberg · reviewed by Dr. N. Rahimi.
