A small publishing house for people who color at night.
It began with one book of patterns with documented origins, and it's becoming a small library for finding calm - a shelf of volumes opening a wing at a time, a companion app that plays a quiet piece of music for each, a room where you can feel others coloring without being ranked, and a workshop of the materials behind the patterns: a dye, a scent, a sound recorded where it comes from. One rule holds all of it - nothing earns a place unless it helps you settle and can name where it comes from. Coloring is simply the way in. The name comes from the margins of illuminated manuscripts - the full story is the first thing we ever published.
Questions we're asked about the name
Is it related to the Gilded Age?
No. The name comes from the gilded margins of Persian and European manuscripts - the ḥāshiya commentary tradition and the craft of tadhhīb, where real gold was laid on the humblest part of the page. Our gold is spent on edges, not ballrooms. The naming story tells it properly.
Isn't a "gilded" thing a pretty prison - a gilded cage?
A cage is gilded by someone else, for someone else. Here the margin is yours: you color it, the pigments are named after your own hand, and the plate carries your name. We supply paper and stories; the authorship is the reader's.
Why do you never call yourselves just "Gilded"?
Because the full name is the name. "The Gilded Margin" appears everywhere in full, locked to our tagline or to the words "coloring books", so you always know who is speaking. One hashtag: #thegildedmargin.
What is the Chinese name?
鎏边 (liú biān) means "gilt edge", using the character for fire-gilding, the craft term. It is the only Chinese rendering we use.
The people behind the pages
Every volume is made with paid, credited advisors, with music licensed: historians of textile and manuscript arts, subject experts for the science pages, artists in residence, and voices cast from the cultures the patterns come from. Their names are on the pages they reviewed - see Sources.
