Its story

In a Flemish workshop, the illuminators saved their most precious material - real gold - not for the text, but for the border around it: acanthus curling in the margin, strawberries and columbine painted at the edge of prayer.

The Ghent - Bruges masters made the margin the wildest place on the page. Everyone read the center; the makers signed their genius at the edge. This pattern is that edge, redrawn for your hand.

Provenance. After a Ghent - Bruges book of hours, ca. 1480, Morgan Library MS M.399. Redrawn by A. Solberg · reviewed by Dr. E. Vermeulen, historian of Netherlandish illumination.
